History Not in Favor of Caleb Williams, Chicago Bears in Week 1

There is a ton of excitement surrounding the Chicago Bears heading into the 2024 season. Fans cannot wait to see what Caleb Williams, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, can bring to the team.

The Bears have been desperate for a star quarterback for essentially the entirety of their franchise. They have continually swung and missed when selecting quarterbacks in the first round in recent history.

Mitchell Trubisky and Justin Fields were both unable to get the team over the top, as the onus will now fall upon Williams. He certainly has the tools to become a star and the team did a great job of surrounding him with elite talent.

This offseason alone they acquired wide receiver Keenan Allen from the Los Angeles Chargers and used the No. 9 overall pick on wide receiver Rome Odunze out of Washington.

Allen’s teammate with the Chargers, tight end Gerald Everett, is also coming to Chicago. Running back D’Andre Swift was signed in free agency as well.

They will be joining holdovers such as wide receiver D.J. Moore, tight end Cole Kmet and running backs Khalil Herbert and Roschon Johnson.

That is an embarrassment of riches for a No. 1 overall pick to be working with. Normally, they are joining a team that has a lot of holes, but that isn’t the case for the Bears, who have done a wonderful job building up the roster ahead of his arrival.

However, things may not be in their favor to start the season. Over at ESPN, information was shared about every Week 1 matchup across the NFL.

History is not on the side of Williams and the Bears. As shared by NFL Nation on ESPN, “Quarterbacks drafted No. 1 overall are 0-14-1 outright and 1-14 ATS in their first career starts since 2003.”

Streaks are meant to be broken; will the USC standout be able to snap this one? The Chicago Bears will be hosting the Tennessee Titans in Week 1 and are listed as 3.5-point favorites.
