A CSX train derailed on Monday morning in Niagara Falls and smashed into a residential garage, spilling up to 2,000 gallons of diesel fuel into the nearby sewer system, according to authorities and the rail company.

Local, state and federal officials were investigating the derailment that happened near Seneca Avenue in the western New York city near the Canadian border. There were no injuries reported as a result of the derailment, CSX said in a statement, noting the fuel spill was contained as of Monday afternoon.

Video and photos from the scene show the blue and yellow CSX train jumped the tracks before running through a fence and crashing into the red brick garage. Black fluid appears to be leaking into the nearby gutters.

At the time of the derailment, the train was being operated remotely at a turnaround site near the track's endpoint, Niagara Falls Fire Chief Gary Pochatko said, citing comments from a CSX official at the site. About 16 first responders rushed to contain the spilling fuel, though much of between 1,500 to 2,000 gallons reached the sewers, he added, noting firefighters then used water hoses to dilute the spilled fuel.

CSX asserted in a statement that the spill had no impact on waterways and posed no risk to the public. It also noted the train "was not equipped for remote control operations," adding the cause of the incident remained under investigation.

The rail company did not immediately answer questions Monday about the train's cargo, or the company's use of remote operation, in general.

Owners of the home also noted another train had derailed at the same site several decades ago, according to local media reports.

    How common are train derailments?

Scrutiny of the train industry has sharpened since the East Palestine, Ohio, derailment in 2023 that wreaked environmental havoc.

Federal data from 2021 and 2022 says an average of about three trains derail in the U.S. a day. While not all derailments are equally as dramatic or dangerous, railroads are required to report any derailment that causes more than $10,700 in damage, USA TODAY reported.

In New York, a total of 191 train accidents overall have been reported since January 2021, federal data show.
