NINEVAH, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – Over the weekend, a new historical marker was established in Nineveh, to recognize the oldest library in all of Broome County.

The Nineveh Public Library in the Township of Colesville held a celebration this weekend for its new historic marker outside the building.

The library was originally established in 1901 when the Hobbs Bros donated a very small, shed-like building to operate out of, before eventually also donating the land where the library currently sits.

The new marker describes how a patron of the library, Emma Brown, helped fund the library’s new building, where it still remains today.

“This library was built in about 1972, and we’ve done a lot of upgrades. We’ve got new ceilings and lights. So, we’re really try to widen the horizons for the community to know some of the people and resources around the area,” said Clerk at the Nineveh Public Library, Beth Klutts.

Klutts says the library offers a variety of programming and education including tech talks, art club, and on Wednesday, there will be a lesson on Hawaii where you’ll learn how to play the ‘ukulele.

Ninevah is also a part of the four-county library system across Broome, Chenango, Delaware, and Otsego counties. Meaning, if you want a specific book, but can’t find it at your library, another library in the four-county system may have it and can send it.
