USGS photos: Satellite images show record rain
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — United States Geological Survey Land Satellite released photos of the risen water levels of the rivers in Southeast South Dakota on X Tuesday. Lewis and Clark Lake, an area near Sioux City and the Missouri River were captured by the satellite. The photos of the respective areas were taken June 16 and June 24.

One year anniversary of Spearfish Flood
RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) - On June 23, 2023 Spearfish experienced an extreme rainstorm, resulting in flooding, washing out roads, and filling homes and apartments with water. “It was such a terrible event on June 23rd, 2023, but the community really rallied together. There were a lot of people willing to volunteer to help those who were in need, and we had a lot of basement flooding, and we had some apartments that were for senior living that got flooded, but there was a lot of attention and care given to those people, and we were trying to help out the best we could,” said Spearfish Mayor, John Senden.

June Brings Record Rainfall For SD
(Sioux Falls, SD) — June is going to go down as a record month for rainfall in much of South Dakota. In the last week, several inches of rain have come down in many areas that’s led to flooding the state hasn’t seen in a long time. Mitchell has set a new record for rainfall this month with a week to go counting over ten inches. Sioux Falls is under three inches away from breaking its June rainfall record set in 2014. A few cities tallied a new mark for single-day rain at the end of last week after several storms.

Mental Health Awareness Week Declared
BELLE FOURCHE— The City Council held a meeting on Wednesday, June 17. Mayor Randy Schmidt presented a Mental Health Proclamation, citing statistics for mental illnesses and suicide in America. “Every citizen and community can make a difference in helping end the silence and stigma that for too long has surrounded mental illness and discouraged people from getting help.” On behalf of Belle Fourche, the mayor proclaimed the week of June 17 as Mental Health Awareness week. The mayor also reported that there will be a State Bridge Naming Ceremony for the U.S. Army Sergeant Lelund M. Kahler on Wednesday, July 3 at 2 p.m. at the Rec Center in Belle Fourche. The US-85 bridge over the Belle Fourche River will be dedicated to Kahler.
