Veteran Maine journalist Douglas Rooks takes on an intriguing historical question in his fourth book: Why is the most important judge Maine has ever produced so little known today? Join us at the Gardiner Library at 6 p.m. for reading and discussion about Melville Weston Fuller’s remarkable life and times. He was born in Augusta, flourished in Chicago, and served 22 years as U.S. Chief Justice. He presided during a tumultuous period of American history, and displayed a strong progressive streak, despite impressions to the contrary. Fuller stood for full constitutional rights for territories like Puerto Rico, pioneered the self-defense doctrine, and established a “public trust” for waterfronts, beaches and harbors. He never lost his affinity for his native state, and died at his summer home in Sorrento.
Butler Road utility extension nears completion
As summer kicks into high gear, the utility extension project on Butler Road, Boothbay is nearing completion. Work began in earnest on the water and sewer infrastructure improvement project in January. Steve McGee Construction of West Gardiner is the project’s general contractor. The scope of work includes adding a sewer force main and a new water main, building an access road onto the Butler Road parcel, building a retaining wall and culvert, and various excavation, ledge removal, filling, and paving activities. Final paving on Country Club and Butler roads is expected to start the week of July 8 and finish within a few days.

Appreciating art at the Y
The cool and rainy weather brought dozens of art lovers to the Boothbay Region YMCA on Friday, June 29 for a special evening. Local artist Charlie Nowell helped the Y celebrate art with his show of beautiful paintings of local and familiar scenes. Several of his works were quickly snatched up by appreciative attendees. A favorite piece called "Buoy" had several people longing to purchase it before it became a birthday gift for a buyer’s mother; Charlie has since replaced it with a similar painting for anyone who desires an iconic painting of our peninsula life.
Rockland forms Collaborative Land Use Review Subcommittee
ROCKLAND — The Comprehensive Planning Commission of Rockland, along with the Planning Board and City staff, has formed a subcommittee to review the city’s land use and zoning regulations for simplicity and consistency. Their work is in response to a vision outlined and described in the Comprehensive Plan for Rockland that was adopted in 2022, and comes at a time when cities and towns all over the United States are taking on similar work to clarify and modernize land use regulations.

Beekeepers at Union Fair July 7-10
The Knox Lincoln County Beekeepers (KLCB) is pleased to announce that we will have a booth at the upcoming Union Fair at 1 Fairgrounds Lane, Union, during the agricultural fair days July 7 to 10. Our booth is number BC29 located in Blueberry Commons, which is to your immediate left as you enter the fair grounds. We will have an observation bee hive on display as well as information on becoming a beekeeper, beekeeping books and free information packets. We will also have local raw honey for sale for $15 per one pound jar and free honey tasting.
Skidompha Genealogy Roundtable July 11
The Skidompha genealogy roundtable at 1 p.m. on Thursday, July 11 will feature a visual stroll through 120 years of changes on Main Street in Newcastle. Karen Paz will show examples of historic photos taken throughout the area, noting the people associated with them. She will also show samples of some of the thousands of images including portraits, family gatherings, school events, house photos, and social groups from the late 1800s to mid-1900s that are contained in the Newcastle Historical Society’s Dinsmore-Flye collection.

BHML’s century of service gets state recognition
Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows said she grew up without electricity or running water. Instead of TV, she went to the nearest library where she could borrow five books a week, what she called an “absolute highlight.” June 28, she recognized Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library for making such experiences available to the Boothbay region for over a century.
Protecting mental health: Maine district bans cell phones, smartwatches during school
Students in middle school and high school in RSU 1 will not be allowed to have cell phones or smartwatches during the school day starting this fall. The RSU 1 school board voted last week to make the move, calling it "another layer of support to improve the mental health and academic success of our students."
