    Norfolk man pleads guilty to assault by strangulation

    MADISON, Neb. (KCAU) — A Norfolk man has pleaded guilty to six charges, including felony assault, after allegedly strangling a woman .

    On July 10, Augusto Ramos-Umatambo, 41, pleaded guilty to assault by strangulation or suffocation; attempted assault by strangulation or suffocation; attempted false imprisonment in the first degree; terroristic threats; child abuse/neglect; and third degree assault.

    As part of the plea agreement, two charges had been dropped and two others were downgraded to lesser charges.

    According to law enforcement, on February 14, 2024 at about 7:13 p.m., they received a call from a boy who told officers that his mother was being assaulted by Ramos-Umatambo. Officers looked through the windows of the residence after they arrived at the scene and allegedly saw Ramos-Umatambo on top of the female victim.

    An official said that the woman had numerous injuries and that she said that this was the second time she had been assaulted by Ramos-Umatambo, her husband, that month. The victim also told officials that Ramos-Umatambo had threatened to kill her if she called the police, prompting her to create a plan with her son for him to call the police if she was assaulted after the first instance.

    Officials said that during the incident on Feb. 14, the woman was assaulted, strangled, and had her life threatened.

    Ramos-Umatambo was originally arrested day and charged with attempted first-degree murder and false imprisonment. He was later charged with a total of eight counts with the attempted murder charge being amended.

    He is set to be sentenced on Sep. 13, 2024 at 2 p.m.
