Greg Sankey received some criticism on social media after his recent comments about a new penalty for the 2024 season.

Monday marked a historic day for the SEC. The Texas Longhorns and Oklahoma Sooners officially joined the conference, leaving the Big 12.

One thing that gets under Texas fans' skin is the infamous "Horns Down" taunt. Sankey answered whether the gesture would be a penalty in 2024 and did not give a firm answer.

“I won’t be answering questions about football penalties on July 1st,” Sankey said via George Stoia of On3 Sports .

Fans may have to wait until SEC Media Day to get a clear answer from the commissioner. SEC Media Days will begin on July 15 in Dallas, Texas.

Until then, fans decided the best way to pass the time was to make fun of Sankey's comments on social media. One college football fan argued that if "Horns Down" becomes a penalty, "Horns Up" should also be.

Another fan mentioned that "Gator Chomping" at Florida has never been a penalty.

Texas and Oklahoma are set to face each other as SEC opponents on Oct. 12 at the Cotton Bowl. Last season's Red River Rivalry came down to the wire. Oklahoma won after Dillon Gabriel found Nic Anderson in the corner of the end zone with 15 seconds left.

This season's edition of the Red River Rivalry will kick off at 3:30 p.m. ET.
