A suspect is in custody and charged with murder following an incident Wednesday night in North Beach which claimed the life of a Calvert County man.

The Calvert County Sheriff’s Office reported that deputies responded to Sea Gull Court for the report of a shooting shortly after 9 p.m. on June 26.

“Upon arrival, deputies located an adult male victim suffering from a gunshot wound to the upper body,” a sheriff’s office press release stated.

Despite efforts by deputies and emergency medical personnel, the man was declared dead at the scene.

The shooting victim was identified as William Lee Hutcherson Jr. of North Beach.

A suspect was quickly apprehended, according to the sheriff’s office. He is identified in court papers as Anthony Wayne Simpson Jr., 39, of Fredericksburg, Va.

Detective Michael Mudd of the sheriff’s office stated in court documents that Simpson told investigators that made the 911 call and had placed the weapon, an Inter-Arms 9 mm semi-automatic handgun, “near the front steps of the residence.”

Witnesses have told investigators the shooting stemmed from an apparent argument the two men were having in the parking lot.

A witness told investigators the shooting had been captured on a Ring security camera.

“According to statements from witnesses and surveillance footage, an argument had ensued between Hutcherson and Simpson in the parking lot of the residence,” Mudd stated in court documents. “Initially, Hutcherson was in possession of the handgun, but during the altercation, Simpson gained control of the weapon and fired, fatally injuring Hutcherson. Simpson remained at the scene and awaited law enforcement’s arrival.”

Mudd further stated that a check through the Virginia Motor Vehicle Administration it was learned Simpson was “a convicted felon, having been convicted of several counts of felony assault and use of a handgun in a crime of violence.”

Simpson is charged with second-degree murder, first-degree assault, second-degree assault, firearm use and firearm possession. He is being held without bond.

The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information on the case should contact Detective Michael Mudd at 410-535-2800.
