The Midtown Beach Music Series in Raleigh, North Carolina, is scheduled to return for its 15th season in 2024. The series, organized by David Menconi and Raleigh Arts, will present a variety of new and old performers every Thursday evening at Midtown Park until June's end. The North Hills area, a bustling shopping and dining district in Midtown Raleigh, has embraced this series as a tradition. The Embers, a popular beach band, have shown their support for the series, ranking it just after the SOS (Society of Stranders) Conference.

Beach music, with a history spanning over 50 years, is usually a blend of r&b oldies, Motown, and Stax/Volt. Most songs have a tempo of 110 to 130 beats per minute, known as the Optimal Shag Tempo (OST). Gary Gibson, owner of the Raleigh nightspot Loafers Beach Club and a Beach Shaggers National Hall of Fame member, adds credibility to the series by serving as the emcee.

The series has been well-received, with an average of over 2,300 attendees per show last year. Fans have come from as far as Statesville and Wilmington. Dawn Baker, senior events and commercial property manager at North Hills, says the series has a loyal fan base who are familiar with all the songs and dances.

However, weather can impact these outdoor events. The season's first show on April 11 with the North Tower Band was canceled due to weather. Also, due to Covid-19, the series now charges an admission fee of $5 per show or $35 for a season pass. Part of the ticket and beverage sales goes to non-profit partners, with the remainder covering production costs.

The 2024 Midtown Beach Music Series will feature acts like The Catalinas, Liquid Pleasure, Blackwater Band, Band of Oz, and The Embers featuring Craig Woolard. Shows take place every Thursday from 6-9pm at Midtown Park. Tickets are available at etix.com. Attendees can find various dining options nearby, including Vita Vite Midtown, Las Ramblas, Cucciola Terraza, Tamasha Modern Indian, Giorgio Pizza Bar, The Cowfish at North Hills, Rosewater Kitchen & Bar, and Chuy's.
