They’ll say the Lord’s Prayer, recite the Apostle’s Creed and hear a biblical passage typically used at funerals, “To everything there is a season … a time to be born, and a time to die.” They’ll sing classic hymns — “Amazing Grace,” “It Is Well With My Soul” and, poignantly, “God Be With You Till We Meet Again.”

CARBONDALE, IL — The Carbondale Police Department reports that officers are investigating a shooting in the 700 block of S. Lewis Lane. The department says to avoid the area. There are no reports of injuries at this time. This story is breaking and is being updated accordingly.
Vehicle theft leaves one dead after stabbing in Carbondale
CARBONDALE, IL (KBSI) – A stabbing and vehicle theft took place on July 20 at 2:49 a.m. on the 500 Block of East Sycamore Street. The victim was in a personal vehicle to a local hospital and he died from his wounds. The original reporter received non-life threatening injuries from a gun shot wound during the same altercation. All involved are known acquaintances and have been identified by Carbondale Police. Their names have yet to be released and there is no ongoing threat to the public.

According to the Carbondale Police Department, officers were called to the 500 block of E. Sycamore Street just before 3 a.m. on July 20 for a report of a stabbing and a vehicle theft.

Carbondale Police Press Release: Aggravated UUW, Aggravated Assault
CARBONDALE- On July 20, 2024 at 2:00 a.m., City of Carbondale police officers conducted foot patrols in the 700 block of East Grand Avenue. An individual in the area alerted officers that a male had threatened them with a handgun. The victims pointed out the suspect and officers approached him. He was identified as Ethan J. Jones, 21 of Portageville, Missouri. The investigation revealed a handgun in Jones’ waistband. Jones was taken into custody and the loaded handgun was seized. Jones is not permitted to possess a handgun. Jones was charged with Aggravated Assault, Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon, and Unlawful Possession of a Weapon. Jones was incarcerated in the Jackson County Jail. The investigation is active and ongoing.

ISP Releases Identity of Herrin Shooting Victim
HERRIN – We now know the identity of the woman killed in a recent shooting in Herrin. According to Illinois State Police, it’s 58-year-old Virginia L. Melton of Herrin. Melton was shot several times by 38-year-old Tyler Mezo, also of Herrin, at a home in the 3100 block of Weaver Road on Saturday, July 13.
