Carbondale PD requests help finding missing woman
CARBONDALE, Ill. — The City of Carbondale Police Department has requested public help finding a young woman missing since Saturday. According to the department, Mandy Pope, 20, of Carbondale, was last seen at about 4 p.m. Saturday, July 20, in the 1000 block of East Walnut Street in Carbondale. Pope is a white female, about 5 feet tall and 135 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. She was last seen wearing a pink shirt and pajama pants.

Carbondale Man Arrested in Weekend Shooting on South Lewis Lane
CARBONDALE – Carbondale Police have released more details into an alleged shooting that happened Saturday afternoon in the 700 block of South Lewis Lane. Police responded to the scene at 1:10 p.m. regarding reports of a disturbance and shots fired. They found two people with injuries that were determined to have been caused by a physical fight among acquaintances over a personal disagreement. Those individuals received medical treatment and were released. Officers learned suspects fired shots during the fight, however, officers did not initially locate any victims with gunshot wounds.
SIU Football picked 4th in Missouri Valley Football Conference preseason poll
CARBONDALE, Ill. – Southern Illinois was picked to finish fourth in the Missouri Valley Football Conference standings in a preseason poll of the league’s coaches and media. With 42 first-place votes, South Dakota State was the near unanimous pick to win the league, while North Dakota State and South Dakota were picked 2-3. The Salukis return six starters on offense and four on defense from last year’s team that finished 8-5 and won a playoff game over Nicholls State. Southern has made three playoff appearances in the last four seasons.
Chapman Sworn In as Mt. Vernon’s Assistant Police Chief
MT. VERNON – Travis Chapman was sworn in Tuesday morning as Mt. Vernon’s Assistant Police Chief. According to Mt. Vernon Police Department Facebook post, Chapman is a 17-year veteran of the Mt. Vernon Police Department. Chapman is a U.S. Coast Guard rescue swimmer veteran, served as a police officer in Las Vegas for two years, has been a patrolman, field training officer, corporal, sergeant, and captain in the patrol division, internal affairs officer, firearms instructor, officer of the year, previous team leader on ILEAS WMD Special Response Team, and is the Team Commander for the Mt. Vernon Police Department/Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office High Risk Team.

Carbondale man charged in Saturday shooting
CARBONDALE, Ill. (WJPF) – One person has been charged in connection to a fight and shooting Saturday afternoon in Carbondale. Manuel Cass, 36, of Carbondale is facing charges of aggravated discharge of a firearm, aggravated battery with a firearm, and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon. During a court hearing Monday, Cass was denied pre-trial release. His next hearing is scheduled for August 13.

Black Bear spotted on golf course
There have been more sightings of a black bear in southern Illinois. The Hickory Ridge Golf Course in Carbondale posted on its Facebook page that the bear was spotted on the course Sunday. The bear was first spotted in Carrier Mills. Illinois is not known to be home for black bears, but occasionally they will pass through the state.

CARBONDALE, Ill. — City of Carbondale police officers responded Saturday afternoon to the 700 block of South Lewis Lane for a report of a disturbance and shots fired. According to the department, officers responded at 1:10 p.m. and found two people with injuries reported to be caused by a physical fight over a personal disagreement. Both received medical treatment and were released. Suspects reportedly fired shots during the fight; however, officers did not find anyone with gunshot injuries.
