CARBONDALE – Amid this heated political season, residents in southern Illinois have found a unifying pastime: spotting black bears. “I love the dichotomy right now on my FB (Facebook) feeds. On one hand, major political drama. On the other, this bear is just doing bear things, just wandering around SIL (southern Illinois),” wrote Jessica Bradshaw, a Carbondale resident, echoing the sentiment of many social media posts shared across the region this week in response to numerous black bear sightings.

SIU Carbondale’s Summer 2024 Enrollment Rises
CARBONDALE, Ill. – Following a strong fall and spring, Southern Illinois University Carbondale is enjoying increasing enrollment this summer, up about 3.4% from last year. “This great news is the result of the tireless efforts of many Salukis and the strategic planning outlined in Imagine 2030,” said Chancellor Austin A. Chapman Sworn In as Mt. Vernon’s Assistant Police Chief
MT. VERNON – Travis Chapman was sworn in Tuesday morning as Mt. Vernon’s Assistant Police Chief. According to Mt. Vernon Police Department Facebook post, Chapman is a 17-year veteran of the Mt. Vernon Police Department. Chapman is a U.S. Coast Guard rescue swimmer veteran, served as a police officer in Las Vegas for two years, has been a patrolman, field training officer, corporal, sergeant, and captain in the patrol division, internal affairs officer, firearms instructor, officer of the year, previous team leader on ILEAS WMD Special Response Team, and is the Team Commander for the Mt. Vernon Police Department/Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office High Risk Team.
Carbondale Police release name of stabbing victim
CARBONDALE, Ill. (WJPF) – Carbondale Police have released the name of the person stabbed to death Saturday and clarified previous statements made about the investigation. Carbondale Police say Traeshonne Blythe, 31, of Carbondale was killed during a fight early Saturday morning in the 500 block of East Sycamore. Police say Blythe knew his killer and the fight involved the theft of a vehicle. As of Tuesday morning, no arrests had been announced.
