Deputies find stolen gun, drugs during traffic stop in North Fair Oaks
A man was arrested and a stolen gun and drugs were seized following a traffic stop in the community of North Fair Oaks on Thursday, deputies said.According to the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office, officers were conducting a traffic operation near Middlefield Road and 6th Avenue when they spotted an alleged traffic violation.Deputies stopped the driver, who was found to have a suspended license. During a search in which a K-9 was used, deputies also found the passenger of the vehicle had a gun and narcotics.The gun was determined to be stolen, according to the sheriff's office.Deputies arrested the passenger, identified as 33-year-old Vincent M. Salinas. He was booked into the Maguire Correctional Facility in Redwood City on suspicion of carrying a concealed weapon inside a vehicle, carrying a concealed stolen weapon, carrying a loaded firearm in public and possession of a controlled substance while armed with a loaded gun.The driver, identified as 51-year-old Robert W. Lloyd, was cited and released from the scene, deputies said.Authorities did not say when Salinas would appear in court on the charges.
1 dead in multi-vehicle collision on Highway 680 in Fremont
At least one person died in a multiple-vehicle collision on southbound Interstate Highway 680 in Fremont on Thursday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol. The CHP said that around 7:05 a.m., its officers learned about a crash involving six vehicles, including a jackknifed big rig, on the highway's southbound lanes just north of the Mission Boulevard South off-ramp. Due to the collision, three southbound I-680 lanes between Auto Mall Parkway and the Mission Boulevard off-ramp were blocked, according to CHP. Motorists traveling in the area were advised to expect traffic delays. There was no further information about the crash immediately available.

Santa Clara County jail inmate dies by suicide in his cell
A man detained for suspected felonies died by suicide earlier this month at the Santa Clara County Main Jail Complex in San Jose, according to the Sheriff's Office. In a statement Wednesday, the Sheriff's Office said that at 6:41 p.m. on July 5, deputies assigned to the Main Jail Complex found 24-year-old inmate Jose Herrera unresponsive in his assigned cell. Herrera was alone in his cell at the time. Life-saving measures were immediately provided to him through CPR. Around 6:55 p.m., medical personnel arrived and transported Herrera to a hospital, deputies said. Around 2:30 p.m. on July 10, Herrera was pronounced dead at the hospital. "The Sheriff's Office followed standard protocol for an in-custody death by conducting a joint investigation among the Sheriff's Office, District Attorney's Office, and the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner's Office," the law enforcement agency said. According to the coroner, Herrera died due to hanging, with the manner of death being suicide. The Sheriff's Office said he was arrested and booked into the Main Jail on July 5 on suspicion of robbery, possession of a loaded firearm, various other felonies, and several outstanding warrants.
