NORTH HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — Multiple fire engines responded to a hotel in North Haven after a fire broke out this morning in the laundry room.

Around 9:00 a.m., the North Haven Fire Department arrived at the Best Western Plus North Haven Hotel on 201 Washington Ave. for reports of a fire. When crews arrived at the scene, they searched the exterior of the building and located smoke on the rear side of the structure.

Crews discovered the fire coming from a dryer machine in a laundry room. At that point, heavy smoke had engulfed the structure.

Units used water from a nearby hydrant to extinguish the flames, and then began to search the building and evacuated approximately 100 occupants.

It took fire officials two hours to clear the smoke and carbon monoxide from the building. One person sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a local hospital.

The North Haven Fire Department urges occupants to always locate the nearest exits and avoid using elevators during emergencies. The department also warned occupants to not “re-enter buildings to find lost pets,” and to always follow the safety instructions given by fire personnel.
