Rural New York Counties Face Spike in Gun Violence at Start of Deer Hunting Season
A recent study has uncovered a concerning pattern in rural New York and across similar regions: gun violence surges significantly at the beginning of deer hunting season. Research led by Patrick Sharkey from Princeton University highlights a troubling 49% increase in firearm-related injuries and deaths during the first week of the hunting season compared to the week before. This spike persists even after excluding rare hunting accidents from the analysis.

New York City offers a concentration of passive affordable homes. According to Clean Technica, “ideally, this is the way that all affordable housing should be developed,” Sadie McKeown, president of the Community Preservation Corporation, an affordable housing finance company that was not involved with Sendero Verde, told The Guardian this week. “When you develop something [with] passive house [principles], the benefits to the tenants are great,” she said, noting sound insulation, fresh air, and lower bills. “The buildings just stand up better to extreme weather conditions, whether that’s wind, rain, heat or excess cold.”

FBI Warns American Travelers About Being Detained in China
The FBI Newark and the FBI New York Field Offices are warning travelers they may be detained entering or leaving the People’s Republic of China, after the PRC recently began enforcing local laws which include exit bans and wrongful detention. Anonymous Was a Woman (AWAW) in collaboration with the New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) has announced the recipients of funds from AWAW’s Environmental Art Grants (EAG) program. Nineteen projects led by women-identifying artists from across the United States and its territories whose work engages with ecological concerns receive grants of up to $20,000 apiece, with funding totaling $308,000. The winners were chosen from among a pool of 907 applicants, and include those whose projects are located in Ghana, Colombia, Puerto Rico, Louisiana, New Mexico, Michigan, and Oklahoma.

The Fountain Theatre production of Fatherland, conceived and directed by Stephen Sachs, will debut Off-Broadway at New York City Center Stage (ii) (131 W. 55th St, NYC). Fatherland is produced by Judy Miller, J. Todd Harris / Amy Powers, Karen Kondazian, Jenny Warburg, and Sonia Friedman Productions. The limited 10-week engagement will launch Sept. 18, running through Nov. 23.
