Las Vegas, NV (KXNT) – Defense attorneys for a former North Las Vegas Assemblyman requested a competency hearing after his arrest Thursday morning after leading police on a chase that led to the closure of a major downtown intersection for several hours.

Steven Brooks faces numerous charges, including DUI, resisting arrest, and assault on a protected person with a deadly weapon. He’s currently housed at the Clark County Detention Center.

The chase started around 4:30am near Paradise and Sahara, and ended a short time later at the intersection of Las Vegas Boulevard and Bonanza.

Police say Brooks resisted arrest after the pursuit came to an end, but he was eventually taken into custody. The intersection stayed shut down until around 8:30am as the scene was processed.

Brooks was serving his second term in the Nevada Assembly when he was kicked out in 2013 for threatening to kill the Speaker of the Legislature, now-Clark County Commissioner Marilyn Kirkpatrick.
