The Denver City Council could decide to ask voters whether to remove the requirement that police and fire officials in the city be U.S. citizens. The Finance and Governance Committee will consider a bill Tuesday sponsored by Council President Jamie Torres and council member Amanda Sandoval. In an email to the author of this article, Torres said the Denver Sheriff’s Department already has made the switch to allow non-citizens. “In 2018, the Department of Justice found that the Denver Sheriff’s department was in violation of federal law when they required all applicants to be U.S. citizens. They have since changed their policy and now allow anyone with legal status to apply.”
