Emporia man charged with attempted first-degree murder
An Emporia man has been formally charged with attempted murder after an alleged incident earlier this week. Justin Colby Barrett, age 34, was charged Wednesday with attempted first-degree murder and six other counts, including three counts of aggravated battery, and single counts of aggravated kidnapping, aggravated child endangerment and criminal threat.

PARSONS, Kan. — The Parsons School District qualifies for a sweeping lunch program that includes every student at school. USD 503 now has the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) designation. In other words, they can offer a free breakfast and lunch to every student regardless of income. There’s an extensive application process through federal and state authorities to prove they have at least 25 percent enrollment who qualify under free and reduced guidelines.

The average homeowner will see an increase of up to 13.6% in their Manhattan city property taxes next year, following a commission vote Tuesday.
