    City launches citizens’ academy

The city of North Port has announced the launch of “North Port University,” an innovative citizens’ academy that will give residents an up-close look at how their local government operates.

North Port University is a free, multiweek program designed to educate citizens about the city’s various functions, services and operations. Through interactive sessions led by city staff and community leaders, participants will gain valuable insights into municipal operations, public safety, utilities, parks and recreation and more.

The inaugural session of North Port University kicks off on Aug. 8 and runs for eight consecutive Thursday evenings starting at 6 p.m. Each session will cover different aspects of city government through presentations, facility tours, Q&A sessions and more. The sessions will conclude with a graduation ceremony on Oct. 3.

Participants must be residents of North Port and at least 18 years of age. Class size is limited to 25 students.

“We hope North Port University will inspire more citizens to get involved in their government,” City Manager Jerome Fletcher said. “This program will not only increase communication between government officials and residents, but also inspire future North Port leaders.”

Registration is open. For more details about North Port University and how to apply, see NorthPortFL.gov/University.

The city’s Finance Department has received the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award from the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) for the current fiscal period. This award is the highest form of recognition in governmental budgeting, and North Port has achieved it 17 years in a row.

The award reflects the commitment of the city and staff to meeting the highest principles of governmental budgeting. The GFOA provides best practices, professional development, resources and practical research for its members in government finance.

“This 17-year streak of accolades stands as a testament to the Finance team’s unwavering dedication to fiscal responsibility,” said Finance Director Kimberly Williams. “Their tireless efforts have culminated in this well-deserved recognition. I’m immensely proud of the entire team’s invaluable contributions.”
