Motorcyclist killed in Sumter Boulevard crash

NORTH PORT — A motorcyclist died in a single-vehicle crash on Sumter Boulevard, North Port Police reported Sunday.

The crash happened around 5 p.m. Saturday on Sumter, just south of Libby Road.

The motorcycle was northbound on Sumter.

"For unknown reasons, the driver lost control of motorcycle and exited roadway to the east," North Port Police spokesperson Brittany Kammerer stated in an email to The Daily Sun.

The driver and the motorcycle separated. The driver landed in the swale along Sumter. He was pronounced dead at the scene. North Port authorities began its investigation and traffic was diverted from the crash area for nearly three hours following the crash.

He was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, the NPPD stated.
