2 people shot during altercation at suburban Chicago mall 02:27

NORTH RIVERSIDE, Ill. (CBS) – An altercation at a west suburban mall on Wednesday afternoon resulted in a shooting that injured two people.

North Riverside Mayor Joseph Mengoni said police were called to the North Riverside Park Mall, shortly before 5:30 p.m. for a report of a shot fired.

The shooting stemmed from an altercation between two males and two females. A single gunshot struck both males who were taken to local hospitals with injuries. Their conditions were stabilized.

Mengoni said it was an isolated incident. No one else was injured during the altercation.

"I don't like this, obviously," Mengoni said. "I mean we try to be a peaceful community and we try to portray that in all of our surrounding businesses as well, and yeah we don't want this in our town."

Videos posted on social media appeared to show first responders treating an injured man lying on his back in a parking lot outside of the mall.

Chopper 2 spotted several police cars parked in front of a taped-off area of what appeared to be the west side entrance of the mall.

"We just seen a bunch of police cars," said mallgoer Tony Sutton. "They were blocking everywhere. We were just trying to shop at the mall."

Bill Marszalec said he parks his car at the mall parking lot everyday and takes public transportation to work. He was unable to get back to his car because of the crime scene. For him, the incident was more than an inconvenience.

"It makes me angry, I'm going to be honest with you," he said. "Crime is getting out of hand."

The Village of North Riverside said on its Facebook page that there was no immediate danger to the public, but asked patrons to avoid the area.

    No arrests have been made.

A spokesperson for the mall said it would close for the rest of the day on Wednesday. The mall usually closes at 8 p.m. on weekdays.
