NORTH SIOUX CITY, S.D. (KCAU) — Health officials in South Dakota are offering tetanus booster shots for people in flood-affected areas.

Around 100 residents from McCook Lake, North Sioux City and Dakota Dunes took advantage of the shot administered at the North Sioux City Fire Department. The South Dakota Department of Health offers shots to eligible citizens and responders knowing many people don’t stay current with vaccinations.

“A lot of times it’s been so long, people know it’s good for a number of years. So with it being ten years a lot of people say ‘I don’t remember the last time I had my shot,'” volunteer Eric Vargas Vanderlee said. “So that’s why it’s good to just either look into your records, make sure you’re updated or just come in and we can update you today.”

As of now, there are no other clinics scheduled, but the department is hoping get more on the calendar while cleanup continues.
