NORTH SIOUX CITY, S.D. (KCAU) — McCook Lake residents were able to retrieve their boats from the lake on Tuesday.

Boat owners had to meet at the boat ramp at the Isaak Walton League from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. They would then be escorted by state conservation officers out to where their boat was.

Some boats were floating out in the lake and others were still tied to docks. Officers then escorted the boats back to the boat ramp.

Owners had to bring their own boat trailer and a photo ID to get their boats.

“There’s been a lot of uncertainty, though,” said McCook Lake Resident Alex Linden, “We thought we missed our opportunity when we didn’t take the boat out when they first said on last Sunday, I think, when the flooding began. So I’m glad they are making this an opportunity or otherwise, out boat would just be sitting out there all summer.”

“It’s been a really big relief. It’s been a little stressful with having the dock break loose and everything floating around and trying to reposition it,” McCook Lake resident Joseph Carreau said. “Today, we were finally able to get it off which is a big relief. I just know a lot of people have had far worse trauma than we have going through this. I feel for them, but we’re almost in the clear.”

This was the second night of boat retrieval, with the first night taking place on Sunday. There are no other boat retrievals scheduled at this time.
