NORTH SIOUX CITY, South Dakota (KCAU) — Residents on Suncoast Drive have finished cleaning up their neighborhood and now they’re helping residents on Penrose Drive and Northshore who are still working through the shock and frustration they have been feeling since last Sunday.

“My daughter keeps asking to go to our white home,” said Penrose Drive resident Morgan Speichinger. “Our house is the big white house with the pillars, and my daughter, she’s three and she just keeps wanting to go home and I want to go home with her and it’s just really hard to tell her that we can’t go home.”

Most McCook Lake residents are now in the process of cleaning their homes but they’re still trying to figure out what happens next.

“My yard has been eroded away and I have not had much help from the city,” said Speichinger. “They’ve told me one thing and they’re telling others other things, like do we have to bring in our own dirt for that area. It’s just been awful.”

The McCook Lake Izaak Walton League has stepped up to coordinate the cleanup of McCook Lake, helping take some of the stress off the homeowners.

“We couldn’t do this without the volunteers,” said McCook Lake Izaak Walton League’s Renae Hansen. “The homeowners on Monday were beat down, stressed out, overwhelmed. We had three volunteers because of the rain. Tuesday the volunteers showed up. I just came back from Penrose and the homeowners were overjoyed with what they got done yesterday having all of those volunteers out.”

Right now North Sioux City is looking for any able body to help clean where the damage was the worst.

“That’s what we need. Strong people to carry,” said Hansen. “I have a house up there that needs staples pulled out of their basement where the carpet was, so it’s tedious work but the more the bodies, the less the work.”

Despite the help of the gracious volunteers, residents think calling in the National Guard would be a big help.

“I think that that would have helped get things opened up quicker, that we would have people being able to help each other out,” said Speichinger. “I just think that it would have done a little bit more than what we’re doing now.”

“I just feel like our police and our local emergency are being stretched so thin, it would be helpful to have additional [help],” said Hansen

Volunteers are being asked to check in at the Izaak Walton League and ensure that they have their photo ID and proper tag to get into marked-off areas.
