NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) – A popular recreation area in Northampton has been closed by the City due to public health concerns.

The City of Northampton has closed the Connecticut River Greenway Conservation Area at Damon Road because of excessive trash, human waste, and illegal activity.

The recent hot weather has seen an increase in public use, and as a result, the city has been making efforts to quell prohibited activities such as alcohol sales and consumption, fires, illegal dumping, littering, unpermitted gatherings, and improper disposal of human and animal waste.

Additionally, the area is posted as a “No Swimming” zone and does not have lifeguards or water quality monitoring. Despite this warning, some people are swimming. The 11-acre park along the Connecticut River is located at 68 Damon Road in Northampton.

The boat ramp and parking area are open for launching non-motorized craft only. Unauthorized use of the closed area will result in a $1,000 fine and possible further penalties.

Any inquiries about the conservation area closing can contact the Northampton Mayor’s office at 413-587-1249 or mayor@northamptonma.gov .
