“The Matchmaker” is an uproarious romp that reminds us to embrace the unexpected in our lives.

The spring play, produced by the Northfield Arts Guild Theater, opens Friday, April 21 and runs through Sunday, April 28.

Before the world fell in love with “Hello Dolly” there was “The Matchmaker” written by the legendary three-time Pulitzer winner, author Thornton Wilder. With the same Dolly as in “Hello Dolly” this is the play that came before the musical

Cunning, crafty and thoroughly modern, Dolly Gallagher Levi knows a good catch when she sees one. When the wealthy Horace Vandergelder hires her to find him a wife, Dolly doesn’t need to look far to find his perfect mate.

Northfield Arts Guild Performing Arts Manager Pauline Jennings said she was delighted that Susan Carlson was directing this play in particular.

“Susan is a seasoned director with a great sense of comedy, which is a great fit because ‘The Matchmaker’, the story about the buoyant and bustling matchmaker Dolly Levi, is a laugh-out-loud play,” said Jennings. “It has slapstick situations involving mistaken identities, secret rendezvous behind carefully placed curtains, separated lovers.”

Jennings added that the play is also a romance, as well as a comedy, with an “unforgettably mixed up trip to night court.”

The cast includes: Bryan Reed as Horace Vandergelder; Brian Johnson as Ambrose Kemper; Brad Hoff as Joe Scanlon, August, a waiter; Marie Gery as Gertrude; Clayton Heidbreder as Cornelius Hackl; Beka Smith as Ermengarde; Dominic Gill as Malachi Stack; LeAnn Finger as Mrs. Dolly Levi; Bren Dunn as Barnaby Tucker; Eden Kaiser as Mrs. Irene Molloy; Jess Toft as Minnie Fay; Charlie Black as Rudolf, a waiter; Andy Anderson as a Cabman; Jeanne LaBerge-Dunlop as Flora Van Huysen; and Elizabeth Eaker as Miss Van Huysen’s Cook.

The Production Team includes: Director Susan Carlson; Asst Director/Stage Manager Henry Hillemann; Set Design/Lead Builder Hannah M. Johnson; Costume Design Kate Stuart; Props and Set Decoration Laurie Page; Sound Design Andy Thompson; and Producer Dean Lamp.

“If you want to laugh — I know I do — get your tickets today,” said Jennings.
