Northfield School Board debates another survey for high school renovations
At its meeting Monday night, members of the Northfield School Board discussed the merits of sponsoring another phone survey in 2024 to gauge how residents feel about renovating the high school. With Corey Butler sitting in for chair Claudia Gonzalez-George and Superintendent Matt Hillmann appearing via Zoom, the one-hour, 20-minute meeting seemed to focus mainly on whether funding another survey of residents was worth the cost to the district of $23,000. Oct. 13 Northfield football game canceled due to death of opposing player
The varsity football game between Northfield High School and Rochester Century High School scheduled for Friday, Oct. 13 at Memorial Field in Northfield has been cancelled and will not be made up on the schedule this season. The game was canceled due to the tragic death of one of the Rochester Century football players in an automobile accident on Oct. 7. Northfield’s next football game will be a 7 p.m. game at Tartan High School on Wednesday, Oct. 18. Of note, the game against Rochester Century will be considered a forfeit win for Northfield in the Big 9 Conference standings.
18 art studios and 33 artists participate in 19th annual tour
Mild fall weather last weekend prompted hundreds of area art enthusiasts to visit as many artists’ studios as time and distance allowed. The 33 artists participating in the 19th annual Studio ARTour this year included Gail Gates, Colleen Riley, Annie Larson and Donovan Palmquist in Farmington; Cathy Collison, Jessica Prill and Sandra Sargent in Dundas; Lyn Rein, Donna Johnson, Tami Resler, Julie Fakler, Johnnie Walker, Char Johnson and Dianne Locekrby in Faribault; and Glynnis Lessing, Juan Fried, Heather Lawrenz, Kathy Miller, Rebecca Tolle, Sue Hammes-Knopf, Reid Hendershot, Fred Somers, Barbara Zaveruha, Evan Meagher, Susie Leidner, David Allen, Joel Froehl, Christie Clarke, Patsy Dew, Kathy Anderson, Sarajo Wentling, Martin Pansch and Andrea Turnini in Northfield. Those artists exhibited their ceramics, wood, glasswork, jewelry, metal, paintings, photography, prints, textiles and collages.
Northfield college rivals play thrilling Homecoming football game
On a picture-perfect Saturday afternoon, Northfielders and guests packed Laird Stadium for the homecoming football contest between the city’s cross town college rivals. In a dramatic finish, Carleton College won the game — and keeps the goat —over St. Olaf College. After an exciting, high scoring game, the Knights scored a field goal with just 23 seconds to spare setting up a final score Carleton 33-St. Olaf 31. With five weeks remaining in the season, the Knights are 5-0, 3-0 MIAC, and the Oles are 3-2, 2-1 MIAC.
Northfield football takes out New Prague on the road
A trio of touchdowns by senior running back Kam Kaiser led the Northfield High School football team to a 22-19 victory at conference rival New Prague on Friday, Oct. 6. The victory snapped a two-game losing streak for the Raiders and moved their 2023 record to 3-3 overall and 2-1 in the Northstar-South Maroon Conference. The literal and figurative torch has been passed at Arcadia Charter School. The torch as a prop was originally made by Noah Schomburg for the musical production of "Pippen." Rice County Safe Roads Fatal Review Committee recently met to review fatal and serious injury roadway crashes data so far this year. The committee discusses possible contributing factors to crash outcomes and makes applicable recommendations in four areas: roadway engineering, emergency response, enforcement and education. The committee is comprised of staff from Rice County first responder and law enforcement agencies, Rice County Public Health, Rice County Highway Department, Minnesota State Patrol and Minnesota Department of Transportation. ...

Three new artists join Studio ARTour
Ceramics, wood, glasswork, jewelry, metal, paintings, photography and prints are all on display this weekend at the 19th annual Studio ARTour. This year's self-guided tour includes 18 studios and features 33 artists in Faribault, Farmington, Northfield and Dundas. Federal grant to help remove barriers for people on probation
Rice County Community Corrections Manager Angela Brewer gave the Rice County Board of Commissioners an overview of a federal grant to improve probation services for adults in Rice County during a commissioner work session Tuesday. The Reducing Adversity to Client Engagement and Success on Supervision Projects Grant aims to address financial barriers for adults on probation. Rice County United Way opens new bookstore
For nine months, Dave Campbell and other volunteers have been working to transform a shuttered former jewelry store in downtown Faribault into a bookstore with a philanthropic purpose. Books on Central was set to open its doors for the first time Friday evening, Oct. 6, as several new downtown storefronts and other small businesses were celebrated. Charges: Northfield woman resisted, assaulted officers after chase
An unlicensed Northfield woman allegedly led police on a chase through Northfield, then resisted arrest. Aldith Joan Underdahl, 52, is charged in Rice County District Court with felony fleeing police, gross misdemeanor counts of assaulting police and obstructing the legal process, and misdemeanor driving after license revocation. Deep family and personal roots. That’s the connection Shawn Dudley, new principal at St. Dominic School, has with Northfield’s Catholic school. Not only was Dudley a student there through eighth grade, along with her four brothers Mike, Brian, JB and Dan, but she was also a sixth-grade and music teacher there.
