Merrillville’s Town Council recently approved a proposed behavioral health treatment facility at 8253 Virginia St.

A property acquisition deal must be finalized before the center can proceed with opening plans.

Harsha Recovery Center will be a state-licensed residential treatment facility for mental health and addiction. It will be staffed with trained professionals to provide around-the-clock care.

“The goal is to help residents overcome (their) challenges and develop healthy coping skills,” the center’s representatives said in a press release .

The Virginia Street property currently serves as the Virginia Place assisted living community, operated by OPS Living. No residents or staff members are being asked to leave while a deal is finalized with the center.

“OPS Living plans to host informational meetings for both residents, family of residents and our staff once we know the sale will be finalized,” said OPS Living in a letter. “During these meetings, we will provide the timing of the closing and will have several alternative assisted living options available to residents. We will also provide opportunities for staff to join either the Harsha Recovery Center or other assisted living communities.”

Officials from Harsha Recovery Center will work with Merrillville police and other town officials to develop appropriate policies and plans. The center will install fencing on the property if necessary.

Town officials initially asked for a review of the facility after one year. Following a meeting with Merrillville leaders and surrounding businesses, the center offered to complete quarterly update reports. The reports will be provided to the council and adjacent businesses.

“They stepped up and wanted to have the reviews done more frequently,” said Shawn Pettit, town councilman. “They (Harsha Recovery Center) came out and talked to their neighbors, and they were satisfied with their response.”

Harsha Recovery Center operates various health care facilities throughout Indiana. Among the facilities is a behavioral treatment center in Terre Haute, which celebrated its 15th year in service in 2023.
