The Munster Police Department will receive $215,000 in funding to upgrade technology and equipment.

The upgrades will improve efficiencies within the police department. They will also enhance officers’ efforts to investigate and solve crimes.

U.S. Rep. Frank Mrvan and Indiana State Rep. Mike Andrade joined city officials to celebrate the funding.

“Thank you to all of the leaders in the town of Munster and the Munster Police Department for this successful initiative to secure federal funding to upgrade technology and equipment for first responders,” Mrvan said in a press release .

Mrvan vowed to continue to support the state’s law enforcement officers. The Community Project Funding for the Munster Police Department was approved in the Fiscal Year 2024 Appropriations law.

Members of Congress are allowed to submit Community Project Funding requests to the appropriations committee. Proposed projects are considered key to the health, safety and economic well-being of their constituents.

“We can always count on Congressman Mrvan to deliver for Munster,” Police Chief Stephen Scheckel said. “Frank has a servant’s heart and has always been a friend and supporter to law enforcement throughout my entire career, and this funding demonstrates his commitment to first responders and public safety.”

Munster Clerk-Treasurer Wendy Mis said the funds will allow the town to allocate resources more effectively while providing the police department with advanced tools. Mis stated that the $215,000 would ease the financial burden on local taxpayers.

“I'm proud of the work Congressman Mrvan, the Munster police chief and our local law enforcement have done to make this achievement a reality,” Andrade said. “Our law enforcement officers play a crucial role in keeping our communities safe, and their sacrifices are invaluable.”
