DART is ending its free downtown D-Line shuttle
DART will end its free downtown D-Line shuttle after Nov. 23 due to declining ridership since 2020.Why it matters: This could hurt downtown's business district, which is already struggling with fewer office workers.By the numbers: DART's total ridership rose nearly 9% in FY2024, reaching around 3.5 million rides compared to the year prior. However, D-Line rides dropped during the same period by 11%, from 71,000 to 63,000.Between the lines: The city of Des Moines had been subsidizing 50% of the route's costs, but opted to stop this fiscal year because of the declines, DART spokesperson Erin Hockman tells Axios. It costs $600,000 to operate. What's next: DART has the budget to maintain its other routes through June 2026.In the meantime, the organization is reworking how it operates, following past funding shortfalls and worries about service cuts.DART is working on a new 10-year plan and expects to finalize it by December 2025.
Footage released of deadly-police involved shooting
(Des Moines) The Des Moines Police Department has released body camera footage of a deadly police-involved shooting on September 16th. The video shows Joshua Green being pulled over before speeding off. It then shows him crashing the car after a short chase. Green is then seen rocking his car back and forth with the driver’s side door open. Officers reasoned with Green for minutes before launching a taser. This came before a shootout between the suspect and police, wounding two officers and resulting in the death of Green. The Iowa Attorney General cleared the officers involved in the death in a report last week. The videos can be viewed at the Des Moines Police Department YouTube page.
