NHRA Notes: Standings At The Halfway Mark
Sunday’s Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals in Norwalk, Ohio, marked the halfway point of the NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series season. A two-week break until the series heads west to Pacific Raceways in Seattle, Wash., allows for teams to regroup and retool for the final grind ahead to the U.S. Nationals at Indianapolis Raceway Park and the Countdown to the Championship.

Throughout his young professional career NHRA Top Fuel team owner and driver Josh Hart has had the unwavering support of primary sponsor R+L Carriers. This weekend at the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals Hart was surrounded by R+L Carriers guests and employees as he experienced one of his toughest races. The multi-time national event winner made four qualifying runs over two days and when qualifying concluded last night Hart had the seventeenth quickest Top Fuel dragster on the property narrowly missing one of the quickest 16-car fields in NHRA history by .002 of a second. For the first time in his career Hart will be on the sideline during an NHRA national event.
2024 NHRA Norwalk Pro Stock Motorcycle Results
The Gaige Herrera count continued this weekend in Norwalk, Ohio. The reigning NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle World Champion won the Summit Racing Nationals, June 28-30, to extend his record win streak to 11 straight races. Herrera defeated Denso Buell’s Matt Smith in the final round to remain perfect for the 2024 season and extend his lead in the standings.

A streak of consistent passes sent Ron Capps to his first runner-up finish of the 2024 season Sunday afternoon at the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals. Driving his NAPA AutoCare Toyota GR Supra Funny Car, Capps qualified No. 10 before racing through a marquee matchup and two past world champions to meet Bob Tasca III in the final round. Though he encountered issues in the final, Capps left Summit Motorsports Park encouraged by his team’s performance as the NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series season moves on to the Western Swing.

Bartone Bros. Racing won Top Alcohol Funny Car at the 18th Annual Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals run in Norwalk, Ohio. Sean Bellemeur (39th national win) drove the Bartone Bros. Racing Top Alcohol Funny Car (TAFC), known as the Pirate Ship, to a time of 5.43 at 268 MPH, the low ET of the weekend, to beat Maddi Gordon for the Wally on Sunday. The team backs up their regional win at the same track just 29 days ago, where they reset the TAFC track record at Summit Motorsports Park with a run of 5.393 at 269 MPH.

It was a banner weekend full of milestone moments for the Scrappers Racing teams at the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals in Norwalk, Ohio. Not only did Top Fuel rookie Jasmine Salinas achieve a new personal best speed in her Scrappers Racing dragster, but her sister, Pro Stock Motorcycle standout Jianna Evaristo, gained significant momentum aboard her Scrappers Racing Buell as she secured a new personal best elapsed time and a new personal best speed over the course of the event. Despite a grim forecast of storms, the Barracuda summer swim team traveled to Willard Saturday to take on the Willard Waves and finished the meet before any ran began. Although the Barracudas won nearly all of the events they competed in, the Waves were able to fill more of the younger age group events and win by a narrow margin.
Sandusky high school hires interim AD and head football coach
Steve Camella was wrapping up a long career as the athletic director at Huron High School and was ready to retire. All of that changed at the Sandusky school board meeting on Monday, June 24, when Camella was approved as Sandusky’s interim athletic director for the 2024-2025 school year. A Sandusky administrator had called Camella the second week of June and presented the idea of working as a consultant to help bridge the gap in the Athletic Department office until someone could be hired fulltime.
