Earlier this summer, the Greeneville Neighborhood Revitalization Zone held a fire hydrant painting contest, and the winners celebrated with an ice cream social at the park on Central Avenue on July 6, Co-Chair Nancy Procko said.

Hydrants ranged from colorful designs to characters like a firefighting Dalmatian or Spider-Man. One of the hydrants, a tribute to dispatchers, was painted by Norwich Police Detective Liz Harsley, Procko said.

Five of the hydrants are on Boswell Ave between Palermo Bakery and Bar and the cemeteries. One is at the intersection of Barnes and Sylvester Streets; two are in front of St. Mary’s Church, one in front of the Dellfield Laundromat, and one is by the Woyasz & Son Funeral Home. One on the corner of 10th Street and Prospect Avenue, and the last house on the left on Lois Street.

    Winning entries

The first place hydrant in front of Palermo Bakery and Bar was painted by 8-year-old Vivien Pasquale. The second place hydrant on Lois was painted by 10-year-old Jamie Pabon, and the third place hydrant on Barnes and Sylvester Streets was painted by 6-year-old TJ McGrath.
