PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD/WYZZ) — After a crazy ride to a state championship, the Notre Dame girls basketball team got a chilly ride to on a fire truck to celebrate on Tuesday.

The Irish, who won the class 2A girls basketball title Saturday, took their championship trophy around to area parochial schools on a fire engine.

“Seeing all the kids at the grade schools was cool. A lot have reached out to say we inspired them,” said Notre Dame senior guard Mya Wardle. “That’s what it’s all about, inspiring the next generation of PND girls basketball players. It was so cool.”

Notre Dame’s 48-46 win over Nashville earned the school its first girls basketball state championship.

In boys basketball, Richwoods and Normal Community are going through preparations for the finals. Richwoods will play in the class 3A state semifinals on Friday at 11:15 a.m. and Normal Community plays in the class 4 state semifinals at 2 p.m.

The boys state basketball tournament is at the State Farm Center in Champaign.
