BALTIMORE, MD—The Maryland Lottery and the state’s casinos, sportsbooks, and daily fantasy sports operators combined to contribute $1.585 billion to Maryland’s good causes in Fiscal Year 2024 (July 1, 2023 through June 30, 2024).
The total is Maryland Lottery and Gaming’s second-largest single-year transfer to the state, missing the $1.589 billion figure from FY2023 by 0.25%.
Casino gaming contributions to the state were $824 million; Lottery profits were $699.6 million; and sports wagering and daily fantasy sports combined to contribute $61.3 million.
All told, the Lottery, casinos, sports wagering and daily fantasy sports contributed an average of $4.3 million per day to state programs and services during FY2024.
“We had an exceptional performance in Fiscal Year 2023, so we came into FY2024 facing a challenging year-over-year comparison,” said Maryland Lottery and Gaming Director John Martin. “Nonetheless, we had another strong year on a number of fronts. The Lottery added a new daily game, and the sports wagering market continued to expand. We’re proud of our role in generating funds for important state programs.”

Traditional Lottery
Lottery sales were $2.732 billion, down 1.2% from FY2023. Scratch-off ticket sales led the way at $1.061 billion, surpassing the $1 billion mark for the third consecutive year.
Profit from the sale of Lottery tickets totaled $699.6 million, including $657.4 million in contributions to the state’s General Fund, which provides budgets for a wide array of programs and services, including schools and public health and safety initiatives.
Lottery players won more than $1.715 billion — an average of nearly $4.7 million per day in prizes during FY2024. Players won 1,808 prizes of $10,000 or more during the fiscal year, including 586 winning tickets that paid prizes of $50,000 or more and 33 prizes of at least $1 million. Retailer sales and cashing commissions totaled $220.2 million, up 0.2% from FY2023. The average retailer commission was nearly $51,000. As of the end of FY2024, the Lottery had 4,323 retail locations across the state.
On May 6, 2024, the Lottery launched Cash Pop, its first new draw game since the addition of Pick 5 in February 2022. The Lottery offers 11 draw games and introduces approximately 50 new scratch-off tickets and 20 new Fast Play instant games each year.
Casino Gaming
Maryland’s six casinos generated $1.964 billion in revenue from slot machines and table games, the third-best single-year total and a decrease of 4.7% compared to FY2023.
Of the $824 million the casinos contributed to the state in FY2024, $600.7 million went to the Education Trust Fund (ETF), which supports early childhood education, public elementary and secondary education, public school construction and capital improvement projects. Cumulatively, from the opening of the state’s first casino in September 2010 through the end of FY2024, more than $5.8 billion in casino revenues had been contributed to the ETF.
FY2024 casino contributions also went to the following beneficiaries:
- Local aid: $104.9 million in support for the communities where the casinos are located, including contributions to local impact grants and aid to local jurisdictions
- Maryland’s horse racing industry: $93.7 million, including contributions to the Racetrack Facility Renewal and Horse Racing Purse Dedication accounts
- Maryland’s Small, Minority and Women-owned Business Fund: $20.1 million
- Responsible gaming programs: $4.47 million in per-machine and per-table-game assessments paid by casino operators to the Problem Gambling Fund
Sports Wagering and Fantasy Competitions
Maryland’s sports wagering market launched in December 2021 and continued to expand in FY2024, which marked the first time that mobile wagering was available for a full fiscal year. The state’s first mobile sports wagering platforms were active for only seven months of FY2023.
Three retail sportsbook locations and two mobile sports wagering platforms launched during FY2024, and there were 13 retail locations and 12 mobile platforms that operated during the fiscal year.
All sports wagering operators contribute 15% of their taxable win to the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future Fund, which supports public education programs. In FY2024, these contributions were $60.3 million. Expired sports wagering prizes support responsible gaming programs and totaled $985,862 in FY2024.
The operators of fantasy competitions (including daily fantasy sports) also contribute 15% of their revenue to the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future Fund. In FY2024, these contributions totaled $983,819.
