Cal Named ITA All-Academic Team
The 2023-24 California men's tennis team was named an ITA All-Academic Team and five Golden Bears – rising seniors Alex Chang, Derrick Chen and Mikey Wright and rising freshmen Alex Aney and Timofey Stepanov – claimed ITA Scholar-Athlete distinction, the college tennis governing body announced this week. San Francisco Man Arraigned on Hate Crime Charges for Alleged Assault in Mission District
A man has been arraigned on hate crime charges after an assault in San Francisco's Mission District. Jeffrey Landon, 58, appeared in court yesterday, facing accusations of attacking a man with anti-LGBTQ slurs followed by an A-Frame sign. TTB Establishes Contra Costa AVA, Expands AVAs
The Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) officially approved the establishment of the Contra Costa Viticultural Area, along with modifications to the San Francisco Bay and Central Coast viticultural areas in March 2024, with the ruling becoming effective on April 15. The Contra Costa Winegrowers Association said, “This landmark decision marks a significant milestone for the wine industry and the entire agricultural community in the region and underscores the unique characteristics of Contra Costa County’s viticultural landscape. Establishing the Contra Costa Viticultural Area and modifying the San Francisco Bay and Central Coast Viticultural Areas not only celebrates the rich viticultural heritage of the region but also provides winemakers and grape growers with increased recognition and marketing opportunities.” Contra Costa’s AVA acreage is 167,146.

The prolific co-founder of Backen & Backen Architecture designed upwards of 300 private homes, 40 restaurants and more than 60 wineries, many of which are located in Napa Valley. His signature farmhouse-chic style champions functionality and natural harmony, favors discreet affluence over ostentation, and has defined the Napa aesthetic over the last three decades. Backen, arguably one of Napa's most influential figures without ever touching a wine grape, died July 22 at 88.
