Brooklyn, N.Y. (NYPD) — In 2005, the disappearance of 17-year-old Darnell Garfield from the Lower East Side left a haunting mystery. That summer, police discovered a human torso and head in separate locations across Brooklyn, but with scant evidence, they struggled to identify the victim immediately.

Years later, advancements in forensic science provided a breakthrough. A comprehensive examination of the remains yielded a partial profile, eventually leading to the identification of the victim as Darnell Garfield through familial DNA analysis.

Detective Anna Marie Bernagozzi commented, “It wasn’t until scientific advancements caught up with us that we could make a positive identification.”

Upon confirming the victim’s true identity, authorities notified Garfield’s family, who had clung to hope for years that he would return home. His father now seeks justice, urging the arrest and imprisonment of those responsible. Detective Bernagozzi acknowledged the difficulty in delivering such notifications without resolving the case.

“I feel like he won’t rest in peace, and his family will always wonder,” Bernagozzi said. “We owe it to them to answer who and why.”

Described as a high school student who attended church and was well-regarded, Garfield’s untimely death has left unanswered questions. Despite the passage of time, there have been no new leads, suspects, or closure.

The NYPD encourages anyone with information to come forward, hopeful that someone may remember crucial details that could lead to resolution.
