Clay County Hospital Foundation Nears Fundraising Goal for $3.8 Million Project
The Clay County Hospital Foundation (CCHF) is pleased to announce that it is just over $53,000 away from achieving its fundraising goal in support of the planned $3.8 million expansion at Clay County Medical Center (CCMC). This ambitious project includes the construction of a 6,765 square-foot addition, featuring a new mental health clinic and expansion of Clay Center Family Physicians.
Steven W. Lewis
On Monday June 24, 2024 the Lewis family unexpectedly lost a loving brother, husband, father and papa. Steven “Steve” Wayne Lewis, 71, passed away from a heart attack in Watertown, SD while traveling home from a family reunion. All three of his daughters were blessed to be able to express their love over the phone before he peacefully passed with his wife by his side.
Linda Harding
Linda M. Harding, 84, of Lindsborg, KS and formerly of Abilene, KS, peacefully passed away on Saturday, June 29, 2024, surrounded by family at Bethany Home, Lindsborg. Linda was born on November 25, 1939, in Lindsborg, KS, the daughter of Carl Martin “Haggie” and Emily Mercedes (Train) Hagstrand. She graduated from Lindsborg Rural High School and received her bachelor’s degree from Bethany College. She later received her master’s degree from Kansas State University. Linda started her elementary teaching career in Colby, KS. She taught kindergarten for 24 years at Rural Center Elementary School near Abilene, KS before retiring in 1999.
Railroad launches rebuild fund
An Abilene fundraising campaign is underway to complete the federally mandated rebuild of Santa Fe 3415, the state’s official steam locomotive. According to Abilene and Smoky Valley Railroad officials, the engine overhaul is required by the Federal Railroad Administration and is a process that must be completed every 15 years. The engine is currently out of service and will not operate until workers and consultants complete the inspection and rebuild of the engine’s boiler and flue system. Other components of the running gear and tender car will also be examined, repaired and/or replaced.
Family and fun during summer reunion season
Summer is the time for swimming, traveling, VBS and…family reunions! We just returned home (a week or so ago) from a family reunion in Riley/Manhattan, Kan. There were 27 of us there – not all the time but for the formal (in the yard) dinner on Saturday night.

Wichita Falls is among multiple cities stuck with the bill as the result of a legal settlement between the state of Texas and a mystery sales taxpayer. Sales taxes collected in Texas cities go to the state, which makes necessary adjustments and then sends back each city’s share. A city’s sales tax allotment is a major part of its total revenue.
Concordia music performance major studies electric bass
Every one of the 300-plus students graduating from Concordia College in May earned a degree that required study, hard work, and an academic specialization. Tor Kartenson ’24 also accomplished all of that, but he was the only one to select his unusual area of expertise: He earned a Bachelor of Music degree in instrumental music, cum laude, and majored in performance on the electric bass guitar.
