Astronaut Joe Engle, pioneer of winged spacecraft — Kansas native, dies at 91
Astronaut Joe Engle, the first astronaut to fly in space aboard two different winged vehicles, died on July 10, at 91. Engle was the commander of two Space Shuttle missions including STS-2 in 1981, the program's second orbital flight. Engle also flew two flights in the Shuttle program's 1977 Approach and Landing Tests.
Abilene and Smoky Valley Railroad Having a Record Year
The Abilene and Smoky Valley Railroad (A&SV) is experiencing its best summer in 31 years. After the Independence Day weekend, the Railroad has hosted 6,233 passengers so far, compared to just over 3,000 last year and 1,500 in 2022. The increase is attributed to enhanced marketing, an ambitious schedule, and the Kansas Legislature designating A&SV as the state’s official heritage railroad.

For Industry, Kansas native Robert Wayman, penning a book about his hometown was something that he has been enthusiastic about since his youth. He was the kid that always asked that infamous “why” question. Growing up in this somewhat retirement community, there were plenty of stories to be heard, and Robert, he loved hearing them. And now, years later, that passion has blossomed into reality, a book entitled “Industry, Kansas, Blurring the Line between Clay and Dickinson” a title that was inspired by an article in a 1914 copy of the Clay Center Dispatch.

Go for Gold Summer Food Drive Continues through the Month of July
All month in July, the Cloud County Resource Center in Concordia is hosting its Go for Gold Summer Food Drive. Tonya Merrill, Executive Director of the Cloud County Resource Center, says food banks face their greatest need for donations during the summertime. Families with children who had been receiving free or reduced-cost breakfast and/or lunch at school need to find a way to replace those meals during summer break - so they turn to their local food bank or pantry for assistance.

Clay Center Tiger Sharks Close Out Season Competing in Kansas-Nebraska Swim League Championship
On Saturday, June 29, the Clay Center Tiger Sharks Swim Team closed out their season by competing in the Kansas-Nebraska Swim League Championship Champs Meet. The Tigersharks traveled to Fairbury, Nebraska to compete against teams from Concordia, Kansas, and Beatrice, Crete, Fairbury, Seward, Wilber, and York, Nebraska. The meet had 60 events, over 300 participants, and over 900 entries.
