Chicago Public Schools swear in Local School Councils from across city
CHICAGO (CBS) -- The Chicago Public Schools swore in new members of the city's Local School Councils on Saturday.Mayor Brandon Johnson and other city leaders were in attendance to welcome more than 500 new and returning LSC members from across the city at Benito Juarez Community Academy, at 1450 W. Cermak Rd. in the Pilsen neighborhood.The ceremony also included performances by the Benito Juarez Mariachi Group and the Kenwood Academy Choir.Every school in the CPS system has an LSC, which is composed of parents, community members, teachers, and the school principal. Teachers, staff, and student representatives are appointed by the Board of Education, but other members are elected.The primary responsibility of an LSC is to elect the principal of the school and renew the principal's contract, and to approve the school's budgets and Continuous Work Improvement Plans.In some schools, such as low-performing schools that are undergoing turnaround programs, Local School Councils only serve n an advisory capacity.
Chicago Public Schools board approves student code of conduct change for youngest students
Thursday the Chicago Public Schools Board members said they took another step toward improving social emotional learning and restorative justice for students with a unanimous vote to make changes to the Student Code of Conduct.At Thursday's monthly board meeting, the issue was on the agenda to make changes to the Student Code of Conduct. The meeting was held at Jones College Prep in a one-off change after a pipe burst at CPS headquarters downtown.ABC7 Chicago is now streaming 24/7. Click here to watchCPS CEO Pedro Martinez recommended changes that would impact their youngest students, from pre-kindergarten to second grade.The new policy removes the labeling of behavior as "misconduct," which Martinez said, "Provides a more equitable and developmental lens to their unique behavioral needs.""The response should minimize the impact of the incident, repair harm, and address the underlying needs behind the student behaviors," Martinez said.The updated policy aims to better track disruptive behavior and get support to school and the students who need it.The updated student code of conduct policy takes effect August 24.
Chicago Public Schools Finally Dropping Names of Racist White Men from Its Buildings
The school district plans on changing the name of elementary schools named after Christopher Columbus and two other white men. There’s a long list of schools, colleges, and universities across the country that are named after racist and controversial figures. Thankfully, some institutions have started to right those wrongs over the years and change the names of those schools and buildings.

Schools in California and Chicago will face federal scrutiny for potentially failing to address bigotry at their institutions. The U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR) announced on June 21 that investigations had opened on June 17 into potential violations of Title VI in the 1964 Civil Rights Act by the University of California-Davis, Berkeley Unified School District and Northwestern University School of Law in Chicago.
