( KRON ) — Two drivers blew through stop signs in the same Oakland intersection just before their vehicles collided Wednesday night. Police said one of the drivers died.

The crash occurred at the 2100 block of Oakland’s 38th Street. Police said the driver who died drove northbound at “excessive speeds” before the crash.

Crews responded to the scene and found a damaged car. They soon after found the driver, who police said was driving alone, needing medical attention.

Police said they were administering first aid to the driver until medical personnel arrived at the scene. Despite paramedics’ life-saving efforts upon arrival, OPD said the driver died at the scene.

Initial investigations revealed that the driver was driving at high speeds and “made no effort” to stop for the stop sign at the intersection of 38th Avenue & Carrington Street, police said.

“As the driver accelerated through the intersection, they were broadsided by a second vehicle that was traveling westbound on Carrington Street. The second vehicle also failed to stop for the stop sign at this intersection,” OPD said.

Oakland police said just after the collision, the second driver involved in the crash fled on foot.

Police said it’s not yet known whether alcohol was a factor in the crash. OPD did not release the deceased driver’s name.

Anyone with information is asked to call OPD’s traffic investigation unit at (510) 777-8570.
