WPIAL announces 2024 championship schedule for fall sports

Eight months before the world’s top golfers converge on Oakmont Country Club for the U.S. Open, some of the WPIAL’s best players will try to tame the historic course.

The WPIAL will hold its Class 3A boys individual golf tournament there Oct. 1, part of a fall championship schedule announced Thursday. Many of the venues, including the use of Oakmont, were revealed previously, but the WPIAL now has finalized sites and dates for all 10 fall sports.

The WPIAL rotates its golf championships among a handful of Western Pennsylvania courses. Oakmont, which will host the U.S. Open in June 2025, was not used by the WPIAL last season.

This fall, Sewickley Heights will host the Class 2A boys individual championship Oct. 2, and the 3A and 2A girls visit Butler Country Club on Sept. 30. The boys and girls team golf championships are Oct. 10 at Cedarbrook Golf Course in Belle Vernon.

The football finals again are divided over two weekends. The Class 4A and 6A games are Nov. 16 at Norwin. The four others for Class A, 2A, 3A and 5A are Nov. 23 at Acrisure Stadium.

Highmark Stadium will host the soccer finals Oct. 31-Nov. 2. Cross country runners return to White Oak Park for the WPIAL meet Oct. 24.

The WPIAL also finalized its championship schedules for girls tennis, field hockey and girls volleyball.

Tennis will use courts at Bethel Park, North Allegheny and Washington & Jefferson for its various tournaments. The field hockey finals are Nov. 2 at Washington & Jefferson, while Peters Township hosts the girls volleyball finals that same day.
