Spirit Lake Wal-Mart Fire
Spirit Lake, IA (KICD) — The Spirit Lake Fire Department was called at 1:30am Thursday morning when a piece of equipment overheated in Walmart. Chief Pat Daly says the staff had already been evacuated when his crew arrived and the fire could have proved dangerous if it had spread.

The Register's sister afternoon paper, the Des Moines Tribune, reports on his Sept. 22, 1959, arrival at the Des Moines airport to visit his friend, seed entrepreneur Roswell Garst, in Coon Rapids. The excursion follows a Pulitzer-winning 1956 editorial by the Register's Lauren K. Soth inviting a Soviet delegation to come to Iowa to study its agriculture.
