Local Businesses Collaborate for Back-to-School Event Offering Free Backpacks and Haircuts
Two local businesses will be teaming up this Sunday to get students ready for back-to-school in Washington. RTC Communications will be once again giving away free backpacks to students this year, full of needed school supplies, but this year they have teamed with Cold Cuts inside Studio M in the Cherry Tree Plaza to add free haircuts for students too. Adria with RTC says the haircuts were a natural fit to add and something they have wanted to provide, along with some extra fun for the kids too.
Washington Schools Superintendent Introduces New Administrators, Addresses Key Issues at Rotary Club Meeting
Washington’s Superintendent of Schools, Kevin Frank, updated Washington’s Rotary Club on the local schools and introduced four of the system’s new administrators to the club. Incoming Washington High School Assistant Principal Chris Ashworth told the Rotarians that he will be focusing on absences and tardies this year. Ashworth also reviewed the new state law banning cell phones in the classroom. Ashworth said he will be meeting with the county prosecutor to work out how to address students and parents who have problems with the new state law. Kristin Murphy and Brenda Meredith will be the new administrative team at Washington Primary. Murphy discussed the new entry road for drop-off and pick-up at the primary building. Murphy also discussed the new staff, the school’s preschool program, and the very popular bilingual language program, which will expand to the first grade this year. New Upper Elementary Principal Rhiannon Frye told the Rotarians that this year’s sixth graders will be working; it’s a revised daily schedule that will mirror a junior high schedule using multiple classrooms.
Washington Primary Receives Teaching Innovator Grant for Painted Rock Garden
Our Community Foundation has awarded its second Teaching Innovator grant to Washington Primary, naming Kimberly Conder a 2024 Foundation Teaching Innovator. The $250 grant will support the creation of a Painted Rock Garden in Conder’s classroom. The grant will enable each student to paint a unique rock, which will be displayed in a rock garden for years to come. Conder believes the garden will be a vibrant addition to the school.
