WEST CARTHAGE, New York (WWNY) - State police say the man flying a small, private helicopter which crashed in West Carthage early Saturday morning has died. Eyewitnesses tell 7NEWS they heard the helicopter in the air, and it sounded like the engine was “sputtering.” It flew a little bit more and then witnesses say the engine quit, there was silence and the helicopter fell roughly 50 feet into a wooded, swampy area between Bridge and Liberty Streets.

The New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) announced academic honors Friday with Section III schools earning distinctions. In total, 11 Section III athletic departments from the Utica-Rome metro area were included in earning school of distinction or a school of excellence. There were 40 total schools from Section III to earn one of the honors.
