A vegetable sold in over a dozen states, including in Ohio , has been recalled due to the risk of potentially causing "serious" infections.

Florida-based Fresh Start Produce Sales Inc. issued a recall of whole cucumbers shipped to stores in several states from May 17 to May 21 after it was determined they could possibly be contaminated with salmonella, according to a recall notice shared by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration . The recalled veggie has a dark green color, is between 5 and 9 inches long and measures approximately 1.5-2 inches in diameter. English cucumbers and and mini cucumbers are not included in the recall.

The cucumbers were shipped in bulk cartons to retail distribution centers, wholesalers and food service distributors in 14 states: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia.

Per the FDA website, salmonella could cause "serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems." Symptoms often include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain, but more severe illnesses, such as arterial infections and endocarditis, could occur in rare circumstances.

While the FDA notes the cucumbers are "unlikely in the marketplace," the agency urges that anyone who has purchased the affected product should "destroy and discard it" or return to the place of purchase for a refund. You can also check with your retailer or place of purchase to determine if the recalled cucumbers were sold at the location.
