Fire near State Route 20 prompts Level 1 (Be Ready) evacuation orders
TWISP, Wash. — Level 1 (Be Ready) evacuations have been ordered due to a fire burning near State Route 20. The fire was reported to firefighters around 1 p.m. and is currently active in the vicinity of State Route 20. Evacuation orders are in effect for the area east of Upper Beaver Creek, Frazer Crossing Road and Twisp. The fire called the Frazier Fire is estimated to be 175 acres and has a dozer line around it.

A few columns ago, I wrote about organizations in the Methow Valley that have helped alleviate food insecurity. In another column, I wrote about Maria Hines’ contribution to the Salmon Celebration feast at Kettle Falls. In talking to Maria, founder and director of Blue Sky Minds, I realized that her nonprofit, in collaboration with community stakeholders in Okanogan County, has been completely under the radar (at least my radar) as another organization working to eliminate food insecurity and inequity in Okanogan County and the Colville Reservation.
Man dies while fighting brush fire
MOUNT HULL — A man died while trying to fight a brush fire on his property last week at Canyon Creek Road, southeast of Oroville. According to Okanogan County Coroner Dave Rodriguez, 78-year-old Walter Oikari was declared deceased on his property on July 10.
