OKLAHOMA CITY – A board that oversees the state’s cosmetology and barbering industries named an interim executive director at its meeting Monday.

The Oklahoma State Board of Cosmetology and Barbering announced Michelle McFarland will oversee the agency’s operations as it continues to search for a permanent leader.

They’ve been searching for a permanent leader following the May departure of Malena Curtsinger.

The board is in charge of licensing professions including cosmetology, barbering and manicuring. It also regulates instructors, schools and establishments offering these services.

McFarland has worked as a hairdresser, starting her career in Oklahoma City. She has also worked in various roles for both the state and federal government. After working in these public roles, McFarland ran her own business until before deciding to teach for a few years and ultimately accepting the interim executive director position.

The board also plans to fill the position of principal assistant. John Funderbunk held the position until April 8.
