11-year NBA vet Mike Muscala is retiring

Reports around the league today confirm that Oklahoma City Thunder center Mike Muscala is retiring from playing professional basketball. The 44th pick of the 2013 draft, Muscala played 11 NBA seasons for various teams. Muscala was a decent shooter despite his size, shooting 37.3% from three point lifetime. He will finish his career averaging 5.9 points and 3.1 rebounds.

Drafted No. 44 overall by the Mavericks in 2013, Muscala began his NBA journey coming off the bench for the Atlanta Hawks in 2014. He spent the first five seasons of his career there, appearing in 243 games. After leaving Atlanta, Muscala would struggle to find a long term home, something he says contributed to his decision to retire. He spent time with six different teams after the Hawks, his longest stretch being three years on the Thunder from 2019-2022. He also spent time with the Lakers, Pistons, Celtics, Wizards and 76ers.

Muscala felt he had his most meaningful moments in Oklahoma.

“I went through a lot in my life when I was here,” Muscala said in May. “Just the city, the fans, the way that they support the team, what the team means to the community, those are things that I feel like I can relate to… I’ll always be a Thunder fan no matter what happens in my life.”

Now that he’s done playing in the pros, Mike Muscala hopes to contribute to basketball in different ways. Muscala’s father told reporters that Mike plans to return to college and obtain a degree in sports management, with aspirations of coaching or administrative work in the league.
