An Oklahoma City man already serving time for shooting at a police officer has received another prison sentence.

In Oklahoma City federal court this month, Joel Keenan Lewis, 67, was sentenced to serve the statutory maximum of 10 years in federal prison, with credit for time served, for being a drug user in possession of a firearm.

On Jan. 23, 2021, officer Braden Downs responded to Lewis’ home near NE 50 and Martin Luther King Avenue on a domestic call.

Moments later, Lewis exited the home and from close range fired a pistol at Downs’ chest. Downs was also struck in the hand but suffered only minor injuries because he was wearing safety armor under his uniform.

In 2022, Lewis entered a blind plea in Oklahoma County District Court. He was sentenced to six years in state prison — with credit for time served — for felony shooting with intent to kill.

Last year, a federal grand jury charged Lewis with being a drug user in possession of a firearm. Lewis pleaded guilty and admitted to using marijuana in January of 2021, despite not having a medical marijuana card, and to possessing firearms during the same time.

U.S. District Judge Stephen P. Friot sentenced Lewis to serve the statutory maximum to be followed by three years of supervised release.
