Manhattan Mayhem Volleyball Club wins 15U National Championship
MANHATTAN, Kan. (WIBW) - The 15U Mayhem Girls Volleyball team won a Junior National Championship in Las Vegas earlier this month. The Manhattan Mayhem Volleyball Club’s 15U team participated in The 14-17 Junior National Championships for the third consecutive year. This year was their first time bringing home a National Championship.

SMSD News: Summer 2024 bond construction update
Shawnee Mission School District (SMSD) has been busy with construction activity this summer, thanks to the community-approved bond referendum from January 2021. The bond has funded the rebuild of five elementary schools, with the final two projects currently underway. Rushton Elementary is slated to open in August 2024. Following that, Tomahawk Elementary will welcome students in the fall of 2025. These new buildings are designed to offer state-of-the-art educational spaces that align with the district’s strategic goal to be ranked among the finest school districts in the nation, employing exceptional educators where all learners achieve their full potential.

RILEY CO., Kan. (WIBW) - The Riley County Fire District #1 unveiled a new volunteer fire station in southern Riley County Friday morning. The new Ashland Bottoms volunteer fire station in Manhattan was celebrated with a dedication ribbon-cutting ceremony. Construction began in February of this year and was paid for with existing fire district project funds. The new station is a major upgrade over the one it is replacing, which was built in the 1960s and was outdated.

Lyon County Commission approves disaster donation MOUs, final Ignite Emporia allocation
Lyon County now has two memorandums of understanding in place to handle donations and related information in cases of disasters. As part of the County Commission’s action session Thursday, Lyon County Emergency Management Director Jarrod Fell presented the idea for the county to partner with the Emporia Community Foundation and the United Way of the Flint Hills.
